Security patrols has been enhanced in Nairobi today, Tuesday in anticipation of parliamentary sessions aimed at impeaching Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Police authorities stated the increase in personnel was to combat potential disruptions. Officers in anti-riot gear were deployed across key areas.
Several water cannons were stationed outside State House, Parliament, and along Harambee Avenue.
Nairobi police commander Adamson Bungei emphasized the precautionary nature of the operation. “We are all over and wish to assure the residents all will be fine,” he said.
Deputy President Gachagua condemned the impeachment proceedings, labeling them as the “most shameful act” in House history. He argued that lawmakers were attempting to unseat a democratically elected leader based on unfounded claims.
The impeachment motion gathered public support, having been approved by 291 lawmakers in the National Assembly.
Following this, it underwent public participation across the 47 counties.
On Monday night, Gachagua announced he would not resign, reinforcing his commitment to his position. “I’ve no intention to resign; I’ll fight to the end,” he declared. He highlighted his election by over 7 million voters, stating that resigning would betray their trust.
“How dare you suggest to him that he can resign without public participation?” he challenged. Gachagua stressed the importance of accountability to the electorate.
He spoke at his residence in Karen on October 7, just before the parliamentary session. “I am not resigning. This is a man elected by 7.2 million Kenyans,” he reiterated. Gachagua is set to stand trial on Tuesday, with a legal team led by experienced lawyer Paul Muite preparing his defense.
