The funeral of Gerald Mwangi Njoroge, popularly known as ‘Makanga Bae, on Wednesday, October 23, descended into chaos.
The relatives accused some of the friends of Mwangi of disrespecting his memory and misappropriating funeral funds.
It was held at Mwangi’s family home and quickly descended into a shouting match, with the Master of Ceremonies seemingly able to keep the situation hardly under control. One family member stood up to address the people present, showing disappointment with Mwangi’s friends.
“Watu hawa wote wametukosea kama family,” she lamented. “Hatukutaka kuzika ndugu yetu vile munamuona yuko. Hapo Gerald vile amewekwa hapo si sawa.”.
The burial of Mwangi was supposed to be a grand send-off that reflected the man’s energy, but his family said it had become a “messy sham” due to some friends. Even Gerald’s mom added her voice to the discontent at the disrespect shown by some of his best friends.
She pointed out three friends, Muturi, Kajuju, and Teddy, whom she accused of embezzling money meant for the burial and reneging on their promises. “I haven’t been sleeping, but it’s okay,” she managed to say between sobs. “
An emotional mother further explained the pledges made by Muturi. “He had said that he would buy a coffin worth Ksh. 50,000. He also said he would cater for food worth Ksh. 85,000. Today, as you can see, there is neither food nor water.”
“What a shame! And you’ve been the ones publicising us on the internet,” she added, her voice trembling. “All this has been caused by Muturi, Kajuju, and Teddy. I’ve left you in the hands of God.”
The drama escalated as the family showed how the fights had affected Gerald’s mother, who had even tried to end her life due to the psychological torture.
