Many people have been rescued safely after a building collapsed in Kahawa West, Nairobi County. Those rescued include a child and some construction workers.

Nairobi County Deputy Governor Njoroge Muchiri toured the scene and assured the public that all the construction workers who were on the ground floor of the eight-storey building were accounted for. “A lady and child present at the site have been found safe,” Muchiri confirmed.

He further reported that the tenants in the buildings around it, showing signs of imminent structural failure, were evacuated as a precautionary measure.
 
The County has said that activities at the collapse site are still ongoing and updates are most likely to follow as recovery efforts proceed.
 
Kenya Red Cross reports that two people have been rescued and rushed to Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital.

On Sunday, the building collapsed, forcing an instant response by the emergency services and the Kenya Red Cross. A video doing the rounds online captured the moment of its collapse as debris tumbled down.

The authorities have launched an investigation into what caused the collapse. They are still determining the extent of the damage and making sure the other structures around it are safe.

Nairobi County had issued a notice to tenants giving them 14 days to vacate the building from October 16, 2024.

The notice terms ordered the tenants to cease any further development and occupation of the premises before vacating the building by October 30, 2024.

Stop further development/occupation forthwith and remove the said development,” the notice read. “Vacate the building within a period of 14 days. Failing which, the Nairobi City County may enter the said land and execute the requirement outlined herein.”

The notice also mentioned that related expenses may be recovered as a civil debt in any court of competent jurisdiction. “This notice shall take effect on October 30, 2024,” it concluded.
