COTU boss Francis Atwoli has asked President William Ruto to help alter the Constitution of Kenya 2010.

Speaking at Ekambuli Church of God in Kwisero, Kakamega County, Atwoli said though the president faces many challenges, the biggest battle is changing the Constitution.

The President wants to bring a project for us, but the Constitution allows the people to go to the courts and stop it, even if it is a good project,” Atwoli said. He said under the current legal framework, President Ruto might retire without completing any major project.

Mr. Atwoli reiterated that although President Ruto had good plans, provisions in the Constitution were being abused to stall development. “We will help you, but the battle you have is big. The first battle is to change the Constitution,” he said.

Atwoli made the remarks as he accompanied President Ruto to the church service. The COTU boss reiterated that the Luhya community, which he represents, is fully behind the President and ready to support his government.

“We will help him, tuna uwezo, tuna sababu na tuna nia,” said Atwoli, translating to “We have the ability, we have the reason, and we have the will.”

He also noted that there are those who misuse court processes to bar national projects, which he said is detrimental to national development and should be cured through constitutional amendments.

Other leaders who attended the church service included the Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, Cooperatives Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya among other elected leaders from Kakamega County and beyond.
