DEATH TOLL IN MIGAA BUS CRASH RISES TO 13

The death toll from this morning’s fatal road carnage in Migaa, near Salgaa, has increased to 13 after five more bodies were retrieved from the mangled remains of the Coast Bus.

The accident happened early this Tuesday morning at about 4 a.m. when the bus, headed from Kakamega to Mombasa, collided with a private car.

Rift Valley’s regional police commander, Jasper Ombati, has confirmed 55 other passengers are injured and are receiving treatment in different hospitals. Survivors told media  that the bus had developed mechanical problems in Kericho and later lost its brakes in Migaa before ramming into the private vehicle.

“Survivors indicated that the bus had developed mechanical problems before the brakes failed completely, “Ombati said.” The collision with the private car was devastating”.

The crash was fatal, with 11 passengers from the bus and two occupants of the private car confirmed dead. Rescue operations began promptly, fears being that additional victims might still be trapped in the wreckage. Teams were promptly dispatched by the Kenya Red Cross to help in the rescue and medical responses.

“The Kenya Red Cross, together with the multi-agency response team, has kept ground in rescue and medical support. Thirty-six injured individuals have been taken to Molo and Coptic Hospitals following a road traffic incident involving a PSV bus and multiple vehicles at Migaa in Molo, Nakuru County.” said the Red Cross in an update on X.

A later update read, “42 casualties have been evacuated to various hospitals in Nakuru County, thanks to a multi-agency response team. The Kenya Red Cross is currently providing psychosocial support services to the affected families.”

It was a disaster of enormous proportions, and this demanded an appropriate level of emergency response. The authorities are still investigating the causes of the accident while attending to the aftermath of the tragedy.
