Police are investigating a fire that destroyed a dormitory at John Mbadi Oma Mixed Secondary School in Suba South on Wednesday morning.

Suba Deputy County Commissioner Sebastian Okiring said the inferno began at around 7 am and spread to engulf the dormitory where the students spent the night.

“The fire spread rapidly, likely fuelled by mattresses and mosquito nets inside the dormitory,” Okiring explained. He added that the entire roof of the building was burnt to ashes and needed replacement.

“Experts will examine the structural integrity of the walls and advise about any further necessary repairs. Unfortunately, about 60 boxes of belongings of the students were also burnt.”

Upon arrival, police started investigating the root cause of the fire. “We found that the building had a solar panel system with batteries at the entrance,” Okiring said.

“The fire originated from the opposite side of the building, so we have ruled out a fault with the batteries.”

Lessons continued later in the day despite the damage. Okiring called on the community to support the affected students.

“We ask all students to remain calm while investigations are underway. We are reaching out to well-wishers for assistance to help the students affected by this unfortunate incident.”

As the investigation remains open, the entire school community and local authorities are rallying around immediately meeting the needs of the students, as well as taking steps necessary to ensure the safety and integrity of the facilities at the school for the future.
