Activist and journalist Hanifa Farsafi has published an audited report of fundraising for victims of the anti-Finance Bill protests.
Kenyans raised Sh31,663,580 million to help those injured and bereaved. The fundraiser, that was led by Hanifa through M-Changa in favor of victims of protests against Finance Bill, close on 25th July 2018.
On Wednesday, Hanifa issued a statement to explain the audit. “We wanted to confirm for all donors how the funds were spent,” she said. “The fundraiser was done to help cover medical bills and also support families.”
Hanifa further said that no payments were done without proper documentation. She said 35,444 people donated money towards the cause. “A total of 208 people and families received Sh30,296,574 from the fundraiser,” the audit report said.
The report listed the breakdown of how the funds were disbursed. “Sh10,126,963 was used for medical bills of 95 injured people,” said Hanifa. “Sh7,767,681 went to 46 persons who sustained serious injuries.” For those injured permanently, Sh2,081,930 was set aside.

“Sh10,320,000 was channeled to support 208 bereaved families,” the report added. Ten hospitals benefited with the funds to take care of the medical expenses.
It also listed administration expenses. Mobi-Changa Limited charged a standard platform fee of 4.25%. “The platform fee was Sh1,345,702,” said Hanifa. “There was also a 2.5% card processing fee of Sh21,304.”
All medical bills were paid on behalf of those injured, the report confirmed. In the case of those injured seriously and permanently, medical bills were authenticated against receipts of payment. “Many received support from the Kenyatta National Hospital disaster fund,” explained Hanifa.
The government then corroborated burial permits and post-mortem reports with the bereaved families. Financial support was provided after verification of an affidavit, hospital bills, and ID documents.
Hanifa thanked Kenyans for their support. “Handling this was a test; I would break down in public toilets,” she admitted. “But I would do it again if it meant taking care of our comrades.”
She said, “I made sure nobody remained stranded, either in the hospitals or burial expenses.” Hanifa also said, “Thank you so much. I’m oozing with gratitude. I love you all from the deepest parts of my heart.
