Israel has killed the leader of Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, in a precision strike against Beirut. Other senior commanders were also killed in the strike, which comes amid growing tensions between Hezbollah and Israel as the conflict with Hamas continues to rage on.
Nasrallah was the leader of Hezbollah since 1992 and died in a presumed attack during his tenure seen as a moment of great importance in its leadership.
Also in the same strike was Ali Karaki, commander of Hezbollah’s southern front. Israeli officials confirmed the operation that they said was part of their broader efforts to neutralize Hezbollah’s growing threat.
In a televised statement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, “this is a clear message to all our enemies; Israel will not stop until it has eradicated those who pose a direct threat to our security. Hassan Nasrallah was the main factor in years of spilling blood and terror. The uncovering of his death is a very important step toward peace and stability in this region,”
Of course, it was not long before Hezbollah issued a response of its own, promising retaliation.
As one senior Hezbollah official, “The martyrdom of Hassan Nasrallah will not pass without an answer. Our resistance will only intensify, and the Zionist enemy will pay a steep price for this crime.”
The assassination comes at a time when Hezbollah has ramped up its attacks on the Israeli positions along the northern border in what it describes as support for Palestinians in Gaza.
His death is very likely to go deep into the dynamics of conflict, especially at this time when the military leadership of the group faces a huge void.
Meanwhile, the government of Lebanon has also blasted the airstrikes by claiming that Israel has violated their country’s sovereignty.
President Michel Aoun called for “immediate international intervention” in order to avoid further escalations and called for world leaders to broker a ceasefire before conflict spirals out of control.
