The Israeli army announced on Monday that a “targeted” strike has been launched in the Dahiyeh suburb of southern Beirut, described as a key stronghold for Hezbollah.
“The IDF Israeli army is currently conducting a targeted strike in the area of Dahiyeh, a key Hezbollah terrorist stronghold,” the army said in a statement.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the cabinet that a new security reality was needed. “We are changing the security reality in our region,” he said. “For the sake of our children, for the sake of our future, to ensure that what happened on the seventh of October will not happen again.”
That was referring to events on October 7 this year when Hamas-led militants launched the most violent cross-border attack. The attack killed 1,200 people and took hostage around 250 hostages.
Israel intensified the air and ground offensive in Gaza on the same day, striking Hamas militants and their command posts. The war has devastated much of Gaza on the first anniversary.
Hamas responded with rockets fired at Tel Aviv that triggered sirens in central Israel. Two people sustained light injuries from the missile strike, an Israeli ambulance service reported.
In the second week of the military campaign, Hamas proved that it can still cause retaliation. This is a year since the initial shock of the Hamas incursion launched the current conflict.
The war has brought in catastrophic consequences: according to the health ministry in Gaza, nearly 42,000 Palestinians have died. The conflict has displaced almost the entire 2.3 million population and has triggered an acute hunger and health crisis.
The situation remains grim, with both sides continuing their military operations. Every flare-up is fanning apprehensions of more violence and continued agony for the civilians on both sides.
