The Kericho County Assembly has impeached Governor Eric Mutai with a total of 31 out of its membership voting in support of his impeachment. This impeachment is tantamount to gross violations of the constitution, abuse of office, and embezzlement of public resources.

The motion was tabled by Sigowet Ward MCA Kiprotich Rogony.

In the first instance, the assembly expected the embattled Governor Mutai to appear before it and present his defense against the grave charges.

He was absent and instead sent in a legal team led by Katwa Kigen.

It is reported that the alleged court order which Mutai claimed would halt the impeachment proceedings was not served in time, hence the motion proceeded as scheduled.

Rogony accuses the governor of a number of serious crimes bordering on high treason, leading a mob to seize private land in Kericho town and using the same land as an unapproved dumpsite, compelling women to engage in indecent sexual acts among others.

Governor Chepkwony’s fate now lies in the Senate where the speaker of the county assembly is expected to write to them on the impeachment of the governor.
