Hundreds of residents stormed Kagio town today, demanding the Senate save Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua from impeachment.
Over 1,000 people blocked the Kutus-Sagana Highway as Gachagua attended his impeachment hearing. They voiced their frustration and unwavering support for the Deputy President.
“Why are we turning against Gachagua now?” asked Stephen Kariuki, a local leader. “He and President William Ruto stood with us in 2022.”
Residents also addressed their message to Kirinyaga Senator James Murango, as they called on him to vote against Gachagua’s impeachment. The gathering was in total agreement as chants echoed their appeal for solidarity.
Meanwhile, a delegation of women from Kirinyaga had made their intentions known, just the previous day. They called on President Ruto to appoint Governor Anne Waiguru as his deputy president.
They reminded President Ruto of his promise to them that he would ensure a woman was promoted to the position of Deputy President in the next dispensation. “We stood with you in 2022, now we want you to honor our support,” Nyawira added.
The protests indicate a growing mood in Kirinyaga and wider Mount Kenya.
The people are demanding that in case anything happens to Gachagua, they should be replaced by a candidate from the region.
Local leaders drummed up the need for women’s representation in the leadership hierarchy. “This is our moment to make history,” another woman leader said. “We need a voice that truly represents us.”
Residents continued airing their views, rallying both for Gachagua’s retention and the possible rise of Waiguru. Kirinyaga remains fluid as political dynamics change.
