Melania Trump has made public her complete support for the right to abortion in her forthcoming memoir. As such, she stands in direct contrast to her husband, Donald Trump, the Republican candidate for the White House.
Book extracts reveal: “It is important to ensure that women have the right to decide for themselves when to have children, according to their own beliefs, without any interference or influence by the government.”
That opinion runs afoul of Donald Trump, who frequently has bragged that his Supreme Court picks led to the overturning of Roe v. Wade. That decision ended the national right to abortion in 2022.
Since the ruling, 20 states have imposed restrictions on abortion, among them Georgia, which bans most abortions after six weeks into pregnancy.
Abortion is one of the prime issues within the tight presidential race. The Kamala Harris campaign wasted no time in responding to Melania’s revelation.
“Sadly, for women across America, Mrs. Trump’s husband firmly disagrees with her and is the reason that more than one in three American women live under a Trump Abortion Ban that threatens their health, their freedom, and their lives,” said Harris campaign spokesperson Sarafina Chitika.
We spoke about it, and I said, ‘You have to write what you believe. I’m not going to tell you what to do,'” Donald Trump told Fox News on Thursday.
He admitted that abortion opinion varies so widely across the nation, adding, “There are some people that are very, very far right on the issue, meaning, without exceptions. And then there are other people that view it a little bit differently than that.”
The Guardian quoted Melania saying, “Restricting a woman’s right to choose whether to terminate an unwanted pregnancy is the same as denying her control over her own body.”
Her remarks outraged anti-abortion activists. Students for Life of America’s Kristan Hawkins said on X, “Abortion ends an innocent life and is the opposite of empowerment.”
