Members of Parliament took time out of their afternoon session today to condemn the attack on Kirinyaga Woman Representative Jane Njeri Maina by a mob in Kerugoya.

The legislators have called upon investigative agencies to promptly apprehend not only the assailants.

MP Jane Njeri Maina had accompanied her client, Baragwi MCA David Mathenge, to the station to provide a statement when she was attacked.

Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula, while addressing the House, warned lawmakers not to make the matter a gender issue alone, adding that it was also an assault on the entire institution.

“It is not a women’s affair, it is an attack on a Member of Parliament, and an attack on a Member of Parliament is an attack on all of you irrespective of their gender, so we should not reduce it to a gender issue,” the Speaker said.

The Kirinyaga Woman Representative was among several people injured after chaos erupted while she was inspecting a solar water borehole project that was vandalised last Friday.

Njeri had arrived at the Kirinyaga Police Headquarters in Kerugoya to record a statement accompanied by a section of her supporters when a rival group emerged and began fighting them.
