Eliud Kinuthia, chairperson of the National Police Service Commission (NPSC), announced a salary increase. On Thursday, he revealed that entry-level police constables will see their basic salaries rise from Sh21,645 to Sh25,645.
“This decision follows the recommendations of the David Maraga-led taskforce,” Kinuthia said. The taskforce was formed to review and improve police salaries, as promised by the government.
“In accordance with our mandate,” Kinuthia continued, “the Commission has reviewed and increased these salaries.” He explained that the increment amounts to Sh4,000 more each month.
Kinuthia highlighted that long-serving constables will now earn a minimum monthly gross salary of Sh50,145. This could rise to a maximum of Sh69,640, including all allowances.
“Our structure allows for incremental notches each year,” he said. “Officers can advance up to 20 notches over their careers.” Starting at Sh21,645 per month, they can progress annually.
Kinuthia also discussed the salary increase for senior positions. The Senior Assistant Inspector General’s basic monthly salary has risen from Sh200,899 to Sh221,915. This is an increase of Sh21,026.
“The Senior Assistant Inspector General is just below the Deputy Inspector General,” he added. Kinuthia assured that salaries for officers on the Haiti peace mission have been fully paid.
“The commission confirms that the accounting officer has ensured timely payments for all officers,” he stated. This includes allowances and benefits for those deployed in peacekeeping missions.
Kinuthia reiterated the NPSC’s role. “We are responsible for determining appropriate remuneration and benefits for police officers,” he said. “We consult with the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) for this purpose.”
