Muthetheni Girls is not among the schools closed in Machakos due to unrest over fire incidents. The school is still open, contrary to earlier reports.

“Parents, please do not worry. We are in session,” the Principal assured on Tuesday. “I am getting many calls from worried parents.”

The Principal explained that the students and teachers are safe. “Everything is going well here. I am not sure why the concern. The girls are safe, and classes are continuing.”

She asked parents to be calm: “Learning is going well. There’s no reason for alarm.”

Several schools around the country have been hit by unrests following fire tragedies. Last week, Hillside Endarasha Academy in Nyeri also gave in to a fire tragedy that took the lives of 21 students.

In Isiolo, three students from Isiolo Girls High School were injured when fire razed their dormitories and sparked protests in the region.

Other affected schools include Njia Boys High School, Uhuru Secondary School, Bukhalalire Secondary School in Busia County, and Ortum Boys in West Pokot County.

In the wake of the tragedies, President William Ruto declared a three-day national mourning. “Flags will fly at half-mast,” he said. This is with effect from dawn on Monday, 9th September 2024, and sunset on Wednesday, 11th September 2024.

He also ordered that Kenyan and East African Community flags be flown at half-mast during this period of mourning. The fires and resultant loss have sent shock to many communities.
