SENATE APPROVES DOUGLAS KANJA AS NEW POLICE INSPECTOR GENERAL

The Senate has approved the nomination of Douglas Kanja as Police Inspector General following a recommendation by a joint committee of Parliament. The National Assembly’s National Administration and Internal Security Committee, in concurrence with the Senate’s National Security Committee, deemed Kanja qualified for the position of IG.

“The committee considered the suitability, competence, experience, and integrity of Mr. Douglas Kanja after the approval process, taking into account its observations and findings, and pursuant to the provisions of the constitution and the NPS Act,” states a report by the joint panel.

“The National Assembly Standing Orders and Senate Standing Orders recommend that Parliament approve the nomination of Douglas Kanja for appointment as Police IG.”

During the debate on Kanja’s nomination, senators praised his extensive experience in the police force.

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei emphasized the need for professionalism in the police force, stating, “We want the police under Article 245 to do their job with professionalism.” He stressed the importance of honesty and effectiveness within the National Police Service.

Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua remarked, “As we wish Douglas Kanja well in the service, we want to remind him of a few things. Following the promulgation of the Constitution of Kenya in 2010, the police force was restructured into a service, and the office of the IG of Police was created.”

Nominated Senator Crystal Asige urged the new Inspector General to ensure better compliance with court orders. “I hope the new IG will take note of the court ruling that has pronounced itself clearly about using live bullets, about police in civilian clothing, and masked officers,” she said. “These practices cannot continue in Kenya; we are not a banana republic, and I hope this will be prioritized by the new IG.”

Nyamira Senator Okongo Mogeni called for a reversal of the practice of masked police officers during arrests. “Why should the police arrest people while hiding their faces? Are they thugs? Anyone arresting me should be identifiable, and I should have the right to inform my lawyer. I want Kenyans to be arrested the way Senator Mandago was arrested,” Mogeni said.

Kanja is now awaiting final approval from the National Assembly to officially assume the role of Police IG, having already been endorsed by the Senate.
