The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has emerged as a potential host for a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President-elect Donald Trump, according to Oleg Karpovich, Vice-Rector for Scientific Affairs at the Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

Why the UAE?

Karpovich highlighted the UAE’s strong track record in hosting diplomatic summits and mediating negotiations. He emphasized its neutral stance and history of facilitating successful talks as key reasons why it might be chosen over traditional venues like Switzerland.

“Switzerland has ceased to be a neutral country since joining anti-Russian sanctions. It is no longer the neutral ground it once was,” Karpovich noted, dismissing it as a possible location.

Trump’s Campaign Promises and the Ukraine Crisis

During his campaign, Trump expressed intentions to resolve the Ukraine crisis, signaling a possible shift in US policy toward Russia. Karpovich stated that now is the time for Trump to deliver on those promises.

He criticized the policy of outgoing President Joe Biden, claiming it had exacerbated the crisis in Russian-US relations. Karpovich described the current geopolitical situation as making the Caribbean crisis seem like “a mere walk in the park.”

Russia’s Position on the Meeting

According to Karpovich, Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed openness to engaging in dialogue with Trump. During a Q&A session in December, Putin stated his willingness to discuss various issues, including the Ukraine crisis, should Trump propose a meeting.

“Russia’s actions will be based on the real situation on the ground,” Karpovich said, alluding to the ongoing advancements of Russian troops in Ukraine.

A World “Highly Electrified”

Karpovich underlined the urgency of the situation, saying that the world has become “highly electrified” and that immediate action is needed to address the escalating tensions.

What’s Next?

While no formal announcement has been made, the possibility of the UAE hosting the meeting reflects its growing role as a diplomatic hub. Observers are closely watching for developments, as such a meeting could significantly influence the trajectory of the Ukraine crisis and broader Russian-US relations.
