The Embassy of the United States in Nairobi, Kenya, has issued a fresh travel alert for U.S. citizens.

The advisory dated September 13, 2024, advises Americans in Kenya to be alert. “We remind U.S. citizens to exercise increased caution,” the statement read.

Terrorist groups continue to target areas that foreigners frequent. Such places include, but are not limited to, hotels, restaurants, shopping centers, malls, markets, and schools.

“Terrorist groups can attack with little or no warning,” the alert warns. Such terrorist attacks could also affect such areas as embassies, police stations, and areas of worship.

Americans and other foreign nationals continue to be high-value targets. The embassy urges increased vigilance while one is in areas where crowds exist.

“You should stay alert in locations frequented by tourists,” the embassy advises.

The advisory is especially timely in light of several upcoming dates.

Highlighted are anniversaries of previous terror attacks: September 11th and the Westgate Mall attack that occurred on September 21st. It also refers to the October 7th Hamas attack on Israel, the embassy said.

The terrorism threat in Kenya is not confined to specific regions. The dangers are shared both in Nairobi and other areas of the country.

“Attacks can happen at any time, anywhere in Kenya,” said the statement.

The embassies have strongly encouraged citizens to review personal security plans, be aware of surroundings among other safety tips.

“Avoid protests and demonstrations,” the embassy warns. Public gatherings can deteriorate into unsafe conditions quickly.

The embassy stresses avoidance of crowding areas and not drawing unnecessary attention to oneself. “Keep a low profile,” it advises.

It encourages following local news for the latest information. The local reporting can carry crucial information about emerging security threats.

Finally, the embassy reminds that help is available. American Citizens may contact the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi for assistance. The embassy is at United Nations Avenue in Gigiri, Nairobi.

“Be cautious, be prepared,” remains the embassy’s central message to U.S. citizens in Kenya.
