Plane crash kills 38, investigation points to “external interference”

The United States has raised suspicions that Russia could be behind the downing of an Azerbaijan Airlines plane that crashed on December 25, killing 38 people. The allegations stem from what the White House describes as “early indications,” though the US has not disclosed specific evidence publicly.
US Comments and Investigation Efforts
White House spokesperson John Kirby stated that the US has offered assistance in investigating the incident but did not provide additional details. Reports suggest that the plane may have been targeted by Russian air defense systems as it attempted to land in Grozny, Chechnya. It was subsequently redirected across the Caspian Sea to Kazakhstan, where it ultimately crashed.
Mr. Kirby indicated that evidence extends beyond widely circulated images of the wreckage, hinting at more substantial findings.
Azerbaijan’s Position and Testimonies
Azerbaijan has refrained from directly accusing Russia but acknowledged that the plane was subjected to “external interference.” Transport Minister Rashad Nabiyev stated that the aircraft sustained damage both internally and externally while attempting to land. Survivors reportedly heard multiple blasts during the flight, further supporting theories of external attacks.
Flight attendant Zulfuqar Asadov recalled the harrowing moments, describing the plane being struck by an external force:
“The impact caused panic inside. We tried to calm passengers, but another strike occurred, injuring my arm.”
Pilots of the Embraer 190 aircraft managed to save 29 passengers by executing an emergency landing, despite losing their own lives in the process.
Expert Theories and Regional Tensions
Aviation specialists in Azerbaijan have suggested that the plane’s GPS systems were likely disrupted by electronic jamming, leading it to stray into the path of Russian air defense missiles. Pro-government MP Rasim Musabekov claimed unequivocally that the plane was hit over Grozny:
“The plane was shot down over Russian territory. Denying this is impossible.”
The Kremlin, however, has refused to comment on allegations of Russian involvement, stating that the incident is under investigation.
International vs. Regional Investigation
Kazakhstan, which treated the injured and has cooperated with Azerbaijan on the inquiry, has proposed a regional investigation committee involving the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), an organization largely influenced by Russia. However, Azerbaijan is advocating for an international investigation to ensure impartiality.
Implications and Next Steps
The crash has brought renewed scrutiny to Russia’s actions in the region, particularly given the complexities surrounding Chechnya and its ongoing challenges with Ukrainian drone strikes. The international community awaits further developments in the investigation, which could have far-reaching geopolitical implications.
