The suspects Monicah Jeptum, Joyce Jerobon and Caroline Jerotich
Three women have appeared in an Eldoret court charged with a horrific assault in which they allegedly inserted pepper into another woman’s private parts, accusing her of having affairs with their husbands. The 24-year-old victim sustained severe injuries during the assault.
The accused—Monicah Jeptum, Joyce Jerobon, and Caroline Jerotich—were charged with sexual assault under the Sexual Offences Act of 2007, alongside a second charge of physical assault. All three pleaded not guilty to the charges when they appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate Mogire Onkoba. The court granted them release on a cash bail of Ksh100,000 each, with the case set for mention on November 4, 2024.
According to police, the attack took place on October 1, 2024, in Kapseret market, Uasin Gishu County. The suspects allegedly cornered the victim as she was heading to a local market, lured her into one of their homes along the Eldoret-Kapsabet highway, and subjected her to the brutal assault. Witnesses reported hearing the victim’s screams as she was stripped naked and pepper was forcibly inserted into her private parts. The attackers also inflicted other injuries on her body.
Passersby who heard her cries intervened and found her being tortured. The victim later sought medical treatment for multiple injuries, including scars from her struggle during the assault.
After the victim reported the incident to the police, an investigation led to the arrest of the three women. Eyewitnesses and the victim have provided statements, and the prosecution plans to call several witnesses during the trial.
The case has sparked outrage in the community, highlighting issues of gender-based violence and vigilante justice in cases of alleged infidelity. The suspects face serious charges that could lead to severe legal consequences if found guilty.
