The Kenyan government has announced plans to distribute 210,000 6kg Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders, along with accessories, to low-income households as part of its efforts to promote clean energy use. This initiative, which is part of the 2025 Draft Budget Policy released by the Ministry of Treasury, is aimed at enhancing energy accessibility for vulnerable households.

Clean Energy for Sustainable Living

The distribution of LPG cylinders will provide affordable and cleaner cooking options to low-income families, helping reduce reliance on traditional biomass fuels, which have adverse environmental and health impacts. This initiative is expected to improve the quality of life for those living in poverty, enabling them to transition to cleaner, more efficient energy sources.

Expanding Clean Energy in Education

In addition to the household distribution, the government is extending the clean energy programme to more than 600 educational institutions across the country. This will contribute to a sustainable energy future by promoting the use of environmentally friendly energy solutions in schools.

Energy Security and Green Growth

As part of its broader energy security strategy, the government is also focused on securing the country’s petroleum supplies. This includes the importation of over 22 million metric tons of petroleum fuels and the completion of land acquisition in South-Lokichar for the development of oil fields, water make-up, and crude oil pipelines.

The government’s energy security plans also encompass the acquisition of geo-scientific data covering 3,600 square kilometers, which aims to identify new oil and gas reserves. The evaluation of gas potential in various petroleum blocks in Marsabit, Garissa, Lamu, and Kilifi counties is also part of the strategy to boost domestic energy production.

The Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA)

The government’s efforts are in line with the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), which seeks to foster inclusive green growth. BETA focuses on reducing the cost of living, eradicating hunger, creating jobs, expanding the tax base, improving foreign exchange balances, and promoting inclusive growth for all Kenyans.

The Budget Policy Statement (BPS) outlines these strategic priorities and sets the foundation for the 2025/26 budget, aiming to consolidate gains made in green growth initiatives while ensuring long-term energy sustainability.
