Newly promoted National Super League side Nairobi United have completed the first part of their pre-season in Kisii.

The team has been camping at Cardinal Otunga High School, Mosocho for the last 12 days. On Wednesday, chairman Samuel Born Maina said the team is returning to Nairobi for intensive friendly matches before the NSL season kicks off. The 2023/24 National Super League will kick off on September 16.

“What we have been doing for the last 12 days was more of loading and team building because we have some new players. We head back to Nairobi where we plan to play a series of high-profile friendly matches,” said Maina.

Speaking before the team left for Nairobi on Wednesday, Maina said: “I’m satisfied with what we have achieved here. Kisii is a high-altitude area and it has helped the players. They are now fit for friendly matches.”

He announced that Nairobi United will sign a deal with Cardinal Otunga High School, Mosocho. “We want to have Cardinal Otunga as our feeder school or academy. We are working on finer details,” said Maina.

Maina confirmed he is working on new signings to be unveiled before the season begins. “We have to strengthen the team. The technical bench is working on a number of new additions. NSL is very competitive and we need to have at least 30 players,” he noted.

Maina confirmed the departure of Ivorian winger Ouya Frank who joined newly promoted FKF Premier League side Shabana. “Shabana approached us and we agreed to release him. He has been a good servant to us,” said Maina.

Twenty teams will contest in the FKF-NSL with two gaining automatic promotion while the third-placed team will go through a promotion playoff. The three bottom-placed sides will be relegated to the third tier.
