A high-stakes raid by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) culminated in a dramatic shootout at a rental apartment in Matungu, Kakamega County, leaving two notorious gang members dead. Detectives recovered an AK-47 rifle and a stolen motorcycle linked to recent violent crimes.

In an operation aimed at dismantling a gang accused of multiple violent crimes across Kakamega and neighboring counties, DCI detectives from the Operation Action Team and the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau surrounded a suspected hideout early Wednesday morning. The suspects, believed to be heavily armed and dangerous, defied orders to surrender, instead engaging officers in a fierce gun battle.
The operation, led by officers from DCI Headquarters along Kiambu Road, resulted in the recovery of an AK-47 rifle loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition and a Bajaj motorcycle reported stolen during a violent robbery.
Link to Past Crimes
Authorities have connected the stolen motorcycle to an attack on a police officer in Butere Township on November 12, 2024. The officer, currently in critical condition at a Kakamega hospital, was assaulted by a machete-wielding gang believed to be affiliated with the suspects.
Suspects Await Identification
The deceased suspects, whose identities are yet to be confirmed, were transported to Bungoma County Referral Hospital mortuary for fingerprint analysis. Investigators are working to trace the gang’s criminal network and its ties to other incidents in the region.
Ongoing Investigations
The recovered firearm and motorcycle have been secured as evidence, and the DCI has intensified efforts to uncover further details about the gang’s operations.
