A fierce property dispute over the ownership of the late businessman Jacob Juma’s Westlands mansion has escalated, pitting his two legally recognized widows, Miriam Wairimu and Lydia Tabuke, against one another.

The Battle for the Westlands Property
The conflict took a dramatic turn this week when Lydia Tabuke, who claims she is unemployed and unable to afford rent, accused Wairimu of forcibly evicting her from the house. Tabuke alleged her belongings were thrown out, and three of her workers were arrested during the ordeal.
“My children need a roof over their heads, and you’re throwing us out in the cold?” Tabuke lamented.
She explained that she had been living in a rented apartment but financial constraints following an accident forced her to vacate. Acting on legal advice, Tabuke moved into the Westlands property, hoping for a court resolution in her favor.
Wairimu Denies Eviction Claims
In response, Wairimu, who resides in another of Juma’s properties in Karen, denied forcing Tabuke out. She accused her co-widow of damaging the Westlands home.
“I have not evicted anyone. Lydia damaged the property herself. I even asked her why she would do such a thing when we are all trying to safeguard it,” Wairimu stated.
Court Battles and Third-Party Claims
The legal battle over the mansion has been ongoing since Juma’s death in 2016. Court records confirm that Wairimu and Tabuke are Juma’s only legally recognized widows.
In a twist, a third party, Jane Wanja, previously laid claim to the Westlands property, citing an unpaid loan by Juma. However, in August 2024, the court dismissed Wanja’s claims, reaffirming the estate’s rightful ownership.
Both widows have been advised to await the court’s final decision regarding the property’s succession, but tensions between them remain high.
A Family Divided
Despite legal proceedings, Tabuke remains determined to secure the Westlands home for herself and her children, asserting it is their rightful residence.
Wairimu, however, has called for patience, urging all parties to respect the legal process.
“Let’s remain calm as we wait for the court’s ruling to determine the property’s future,” Wairimu said.
A Legacy in Dispute
Jacob Juma’s death not only left a vacuum in Kenya’s business community but also exposed deep divisions within his family. As the succession case unfolds, the fate of the Westlands mansion remains uncertain, prolonging the struggle between the two widows.
