n a major scandal, Baltasar Engonga, Director General of Equatorial Guinea’s National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF), was arrested following allegations that he recorded over 400 explicit videos with the wives of high-ranking officials. The revelations came to light during an investigation into a separate fraud case against Engonga, 54, when authorities discovered numerous CDs containing sensitive content during searches of his home and office.

The explicit recordings are said to involve spouses of prominent figures, including the wife of the Director General of Police, close family members of senior government officials, and relatives of President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo. Some videos were reportedly filmed in Engonga’s office, with the national flag visible in the background, a detail that has fueled public outrage.

Reports indicate that the encounters were consensual, yet the leak of these videos has stirred widespread indignation and intense media coverage, with Ahora EG calling it an unprecedented violation of ethical standards for a public official. Known locally as “Bello,” Engonga’s actions have sparked a national debate on professional conduct among government officials.

In response, Attorney General Nzang Nguema clarified that consensual relationships are not criminal under current law, though he raised concerns about public health risks tied to Engonga’s activities and emphasized the need for a safe reporting environment for any non-consensual encounters. Additionally, Vice President Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue issued a strong statement condemning the behavior, stressing the importance of ethics and respect within the administration.

The scandal has prompted immediate government action, including a suspension of any official involved in sexual conduct within ministry premises as part of a new “zero tolerance” policy on actions undermining public trust. Authorities have underscored the importance of integrity and professionalism in public service, aiming to restore public confidence and foster a culture of respect within government institutions.
