Former police spokesperson Charles Owino has criticized Public Service Cabinet Secretary (CS) Justin Muturi for his public condemnation of the government regarding the alleged abduction of his son.
Owino accused Muturi of breaching trust bestowed upon him by President William Ruto, asserting that publicly airing such grievances undermines the Cabinet’s integrity. Speaking on Citizen TV on Thursday, January 14, 2025, Owino urged Muturi to resign if he is uncomfortable serving in the Kenya Kwanza government.
“When a Cabinet decision is made, members have two choices: abide by it or resign. Public condemnation is not an option for a sitting CS,” Owino remarked.
Distancing Ruto From the Abduction
Owino dismissed claims that President Ruto was involved in the abduction of Muturi’s son, explaining that security agencies such as the National Intelligence Service (NIS) operate independently and follow established communication protocols with the National Security Council and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
“NIS is a critical organ of national security, reporting to the appropriate bodies. Linking the president directly to this matter is unfounded,” Owino stated.
Muturi’s son was allegedly abducted by armed individuals along Denis Pritt Road in Nairobi five months ago. The incident has since resurfaced in the public discourse, prompting speculation about the inner workings of Ruto’s administration.
Cabinet Division and Public Debate
The fallout has exposed cracks within Ruto’s government, with Muturi and his allies expressing frustration over rising cases of abductions. Owino criticized Muturi for failing to address the issue internally, emphasizing that the former Attorney General should respect the confidentiality of his position.
“Muturi, as a former member of the National Security Council, should understand that sensitive matters are best handled through proper channels, not in the public domain,” Owino said.
Public Reaction and Political Implications
Muturi’s revelation about his son’s abduction, which reportedly occurred months ago, has sparked intense public debate. While some Kenyans empathize with his plight, others view his statements as a sign of discord within the administration.
The situation has fueled speculation about Muturi’s future in Ruto’s government, with analysts suggesting that his public criticism could signal deeper dissatisfaction or political maneuvering.
