Ex-MP Peter Mwathi Recounts Harrowing Ordeal Following Attack at Limuru Funeral

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was swiftly escorted to safety after armed individuals disrupted a funeral in Bibirioni village, Limuru, on November 28, 2024.

Former Limuru Member of Parliament Peter Mwathi has come forward with a chilling account of his abduction during the chaos that marred a funeral in Bibirioni village, Limuru, on November 28, 2024. The event, attended by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, was disrupted when armed goons stormed the venue, forcing Gachagua to be whisked away to safety.

Mwathi alleged that his abductors were operatives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). He claimed the abduction occurred as he attempted to flee the violence, which he believes was orchestrated to target him.

Abduction at Gunpoint

The former MP recounted how his escape plan turned into a nightmare. He and his assistant hailed a taxi to leave Naivasha but were intercepted en route by two vehicles, a black and a green Subaru.

“We were stopped by two Subarus—one blocked our path from the front while another pulled up behind us. Armed men emerged and forced us out at gunpoint,” Mwathi narrated.

The assailants, masked and hooded, warned him against making eye contact, instead instructing him to focus on the shotgun pointed at him.

Torture and Interrogation

Mwathi claimed he endured hours of torture and intense questioning.

“All of them were hooded, including the driver. They made it clear I should not look at them, only at the firearms they held. The interrogation was relentless,” he said.

After hours of torment, Mwathi said he was driven to the Southern Bypass in Nairobi and dumped along the roadside. He was left to find his way home, shaken but determined to tell his story.

Intent to Harm Alleged

Mwathi alleged that the chaos at the funeral was orchestrated with the intent to harm him. He described running for over two kilometers to evade armed youth who pursued him relentlessly.

“They chased after us with machetes, pangas, and nut rungus. For the first time in my life, I ran frantically, knowing they meant to kill me,” he stated.

Investigations Underway

Police have since launched an investigation into the incident, which disrupted the solemn funeral service. Meanwhile, Gachagua and his allies have pointed fingers at the government, accusing it of orchestrating the attack.

Calls for Justice

The abduction and violence have sparked widespread condemnation, with leaders and citizens demanding swift action against the perpetrators. Mwathi, speaking alongside Azimio co-principal Kalonzo Musyoka at a press briefing in Nairobi, called for accountability and protection for those targeted by political violence.

“The government must ensure that no Kenyan is subjected to such acts of terror,” Mwathi urged.
