Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has unveiled an ambitious plan to revolutionize Kenya’s leather industry, with over 300 companies expressing interest in establishing operations at the Kenanie Leather Industrial Park in Mavoko, Machakos County. Among the prospective investors is Gucci, the iconic global luxury brand renowned for its designer leather goods.

Transforming Kenya’s Leather Industry
The Kenanie Leather Industrial Park is envisioned as a value-addition hub that will transform raw hides and skins into high-quality leather products such as shoes, bags, and accessories. Speaking at a consultative forum with Isiolo County leaders, Deputy President Kindiki emphasized the park’s potential to elevate Kenya’s economy, projecting an increase in the leather sector’s contribution from Ksh 10 billion to Ksh 150 billion annually.
“Industries that use leather to make premium products, like Gucci, are showing interest in setting up shop at Kenanie. That is how you transform a country—by creating opportunities and utilizing resources for the benefit of everyone, especially those at the bottom of the pyramid,” Kindiki remarked.

Economic Impact and Opportunities
The establishment of the Kenanie Leather Industrial Park is expected to create a ripple effect across Kenya’s economy. Key benefits include:
- Job Creation: Thousands of jobs for locals, ranging from raw material processing to high-end manufacturing.
- Increased Demand: Local hides and skins will become highly sought after, raising their market value.
- Foreign Investment: The presence of global brands like Gucci will attract other investors, solidifying Kenya’s reputation in international trade.
- Local Manufacturing Boost: Kenyan manufacturers will have opportunities to collaborate with global players and enhance their capabilities.
Kindiki highlighted that the park’s demand for hides and skins would exceed local supply, creating opportunities for partnerships with regional and international suppliers.
Infrastructure and Progress
The government is finalizing infrastructure development for the park, including road tarmacking, power upgrades, and a water treatment plant. Set on over 500 acres, the park aims to provide a comprehensive facility for leather, footwear, and allied industries. According to Kindiki, the park is on track to open by the end of the year, signaling a new era for Kenya’s industrial sector.
A Global Perspective
Gucci’s interest in Kenya marks a significant shift in the luxury brand’s production strategy, as its manufacturing operations are primarily based in Europe, with key facilities in Italy, France, and Spain. The move could further diversify Gucci’s supply chain while tapping into Kenya’s burgeoning leather industry.
Conclusion
With the Kenanie Leather Industrial Park nearing completion, Kenya is poised to become a global player in the leather industry. By attracting luxury brands and fostering local production, this initiative underscores the transformative potential of industrialization and strategic partnerships in driving economic growth.
