A tragic incident unfolded in Mathare 4A early Monday morning when a single father was brutally stabbed and killed by suspected thugs while walking his three-year-old son to school. The attack occurred around 5:40 a.m., leaving the neighborhood in shock and raising fresh concerns about rampant insecurity in the area.

Fatal Attack in the Early Hours

The victim, identified as Michael, was reportedly stabbed in the abdomen with what is believed to have been a knife. According to Irene, a neighbor who rushed to the scene, the deceased cried out for help before succumbing to his injuries.

“I heard loud distress calls outside my house and rushed out with my flashlight. That’s when I saw him lying on the ground, struggling for breath. His little boy was standing nearby, crying helplessly,” Irene recounted.

Despite the neighbors’ efforts to assist, Michael tragically passed away before an ambulance could arrive.

A Life of Struggle Cut Short

Michael was a single father who had been raising his son alone since infancy. Known as a hardworking construction worker, his life was dedicated to providing for his child, who now faces an uncertain future.

At the scene of the attack, a lunchbox filled with ugali and omena—intended to be his son’s school lunch—was found scattered on the dusty road. The heartbreaking image symbolized the struggles Michael faced to ensure his child’s well-being.

Residents Demand Action Against Insecurity

Mathare 4A residents expressed outrage over the rising cases of crime in the area. Felix Popo, a reformed youth and community activist, lamented the deteriorating security.

“There have been too many fatal stabbings here recently. People live in constant fear. This tragedy shows why we must encourage the youth to abandon crime before it’s too late,” said Popo.

Residents also criticized law enforcement, accusing the police of ineptitude in addressing insecurity. Tensions boiled over as locals briefly blocked officers from Muthaiga Police Station from collecting the body, demanding more proactive measures to curb crime.
