JKIA Triumphs Over Top African Airports Amid Controversy Surrounding Proposed Lease to Adani Airport Holdings

Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), East Africa’s busiest hub, has been honored as Africa’s Leading Airport at the 2024 World Travel Awards. This prestigious accolade reflects JKIA’s dedication to improving passenger services and maintaining operational excellence.

According to the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA), the award is a testament to the airport’s commitment to offering world-class service and ensuring an enhanced travel experience for all passengers.

“This win highlights JKIA’s unwavering efforts to deliver exceptional service, increase operational efficiency, and continuously enhance the passenger experience,” the KAA stated.

The KAA also expressed gratitude to its staff and passengers, saying, “We are incredibly proud of our team’s hard work and dedication that made this possible, and we extend our thanks to all our passengers and partners for their continued support.”

JKIA Outshines Top African Airports

In securing the top position, JKIA edged out strong competition from six other major airports across Africa. These included Cape Town International Airport (South Africa), Casablanca Mohammed V International Airport (Morocco), and Julius Nyerere International Airport (Tanzania). Other contenders were Kigali International Airport (Rwanda), King Shaka International Airport (Durban, South Africa), and O.R. Tambo International Airport (Johannesburg, South Africa).

Celebrating Excellence in Travel and Hospitality

The World Travel Awards, established in 1993, is a global event that recognizes and rewards excellence in the travel and hospitality industries. The 2024 ceremony was held at Diamonds Leisure Beach & Golf Resort in Diani Beach, Kenya, on October 18.

At the same event, Kenya Airways also secured top honors, winning three major awards: Africa’s Leading Airline 2024, Africa’s Leading Airline-Business Class 2024, and Africa’s Leading Airline Brand 2024. In addition, Nairobi was named Africa’s Leading Business Travel Destination 2024, while Tanzania claimed the title of Africa’s Leading Destination 2024.

JKIA’s Future Amid Controversy

JKIA’s victory comes at a time when there is ongoing public debate regarding the Kenyan government’s proposal to lease the airport to Indian conglomerate Adani Airport Holdings. The 30-year lease, part of a Public-Private Partnership (PPP), is aimed at renovating and expanding the airport’s facilities.

The proposed deal, valued at Ksh.238 billion, would see significant upgrades, including the construction of a new passenger terminal, refurbishment of existing terminals, and enhancements to cargo handling facilities. Additionally, a second runway is planned to improve operational capacity.

However, the deal has sparked controversy due to the opaque nature of the agreement. Many Kenyans have raised concerns about transparency, leading to several court cases challenging the proposal. Despite the legal hurdles, the potential partnership could transform JKIA into a world-class aviation hub if it moves forward.
