Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has strongly criticized the government, alleging it bears primary responsibility for criminal activities attributed to security agencies.
Speaking at a press conference in Nairobi, Kalonzo called out the Kenya Kwanza administration, accusing it of reverting Kenya into a “police state” and eroding citizens’ rights.
“It is our contention that the government carries the biggest responsibility for police phone spying, state-sponsored abductions, hijackings, and extrajudicial killings,” said Kalonzo. He expressed disappointment over the government’s response to these allegations, noting that officials claim to be unaware of such incidents and dismiss reports as “fake news and propaganda.”
Kalonzo further urged government leaders alleged to be involved in these actions to resign for violating their Oath of Office “to be faithful and bear true allegiance to the Republic of Kenya.” He underscored the harm this approach inflicts on the nation, claiming it fosters fear and insecurity among Kenyans.
The outcry against alleged surveillance and extrajudicial practices has gained international attention. On October 29, U.S. Ambassador to Kenya, Meg Whitman, voiced her concerns over reports that Kenyan authorities have been tracking citizens’ locations via mobile phones, leading to abductions or unlawful arrests.
Whitman emphasized the need to uphold privacy rights, a cornerstone of democratic governance. “I don’t know enough about this issue yet, but what I will say is the laws of privacy and the rule of law around your rights as a private citizen must always be respected in democracies,” she stated. Whitman underscored that these allegations should be taken seriously, as privacy and individual freedoms are fundamental rights in any democracy.
The allegations of government surveillance have sparked public concern, with reports suggesting that citizens’ location data is being misused to facilitate abductions and unwarranted arrests. Whitman emphasized the importance of holding governments accountable and called for a thorough investigation to address the situation.
