Patricia Kaliati, aiming to challenge President Lazarus Chakwera in next year’s election, faces serious allegations of plotting his assassination.

Patricia Kaliati who is alleged to plot assassination on Malawian president Lazarus Chakwera
Patricia Kaliati, Secretary-General of Malawi’s UTM Party and a prominent opposition figure, was recently charged with conspiring to assassinate President Lazarus Chakwera. The 57-year-old politician, who hopes to run against Chakwera in the upcoming election, was arrested on suspicion of planning the plot alongside two alleged accomplices who remain at large.
In a court appearance in Lilongwe on Monday, Kaliati did not speak, but her lawyer maintained her innocence. Supporters of the UTM party, gathered outside the courthouse, demonstrated by singing anti-government songs, indicating that they believe the charges are politically motivated.
Inside the courtroom, the magistrate granted Kaliati bail as the investigation continues, rejecting the state prosecutor’s request to hold her for an additional week. The state has assured that Kaliati’s rights will be upheld during the proceedings.
The UTM party, previously part of the ruling coalition, exited the government in June following the tragic death of its leader and former Vice-President Saulos Chilima, who died in a military aircraft crash. Since then, Kaliati has positioned herself to lead the UTM and aims to contest Chakwera’s presidency in the upcoming election.
A former primary school teacher, Kaliati is known for her outspoken and candid demeanor, which has garnered her a strong following among Malawian citizens.
