MURANG’A TO SPONSOR TOP DAY SCHOOL STUDENTS STARTING JANUARY - Kenyan News

Governor Irungu Kang’ata unveils a transformative programme to support top-performing day school students across Murang’a County.

From January 2025, the Murang’a County government will cover school fees for the top 10 students in every class at all-day secondary schools. This initiative, spearheaded by Governor Irungu Kang’ata, aims to improve academic performance and bridge the gap between day and boarding schools.

Addressing Challenges Faced by Day School Learners

Speaking during a Christmas donation drive in Murang’a Town, Governor Kang’ata highlighted the unique struggles faced by day school students.

“Many students walk long distances, crossing several villages to reach school early in the morning. Girls, in particular, face safety risks during these treks, while boarding school students can simply wake up and head to class,” he said.

The programme will reward the top-performing students with cheques, which they can present to their schools to cover tuition fees.

Boosting Day School Academic Performance

The governor noted that the programme is designed to encourage competition among learners and improve overall academic results in day schools.

“Targeting day schools allows us to benefit the most vulnerable students, many of whom attend local schools due to financial constraints despite their potential,” Kang’ata added.

Murang’a County has a history of supporting education. For example, top five KCPE candidates from public primary schools receive KSh 15,000 each, while orphans get KSh 10,000 to aid their transition to secondary school.

Day Schools Outperforming Against the Odds

Governor Kang’ata cited Karega Day Secondary School in Kigumo Subcounty as a shining example. This year, the school saw 100 students qualify for university admission, earning recognition as one of the top inter-county schools.

To celebrate the school’s success, its management recently sponsored a trip to Zanzibar for teachers. With this new programme, the county hopes to replicate such success stories across more schools.

Encouraging Competition for Better Results

By investing in education for top performers, the county aims to create a competitive academic environment while addressing the financial hurdles faced by students in day schools.

“This programme will motivate learners to study harder and perform better, ultimately raising the standards of education in Murang’a,” Kang’ata concluded.
