In a fiery exchange that underscores Kenya’s evolving political landscape, President William Ruto launched a scathing critique of impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, accusing him of stoking ethnic divisions and fostering a climate of corruption and incompetence.

Ruto’s Sharp Rebuke in Vihiga County
Addressing a gathering in Luanda, Vihiga County, President Ruto lambasted his former deputy for what he described as a divisive and regressive approach to politics. Without naming names explicitly, Ruto referenced past political allies ousted from positions of influence due to alleged underperformance and dishonesty, an apparent jab at Gachagua.
“Some people want to sell us the politics of tribalism and hatred. Let me tell them that Kenyans cannot buy tribalism or division,” Ruto declared.
He added:
“We entrusted some individuals with responsibilities, but because of incompetence, dishonesty, and corruption, they failed. Their divisive politics sank their ship, and they will sink even further.”
Mount Kenya Politics and the 2027 Elections
Since his impeachment, Gachagua has been a persistent critic of the Kenya Kwanza administration. His efforts to rally support in the Mount Kenya region appear aimed at consolidating his base ahead of the 2027 general elections, potentially challenging Ruto’s dominance in the region.
Ruto, however, remained resolute in his commitment to unity, emphasizing that Kenya’s future lies in shared values rather than ethnic divisions.
“Kenya has no room for corruption, incompetence, or tribalism. We are united as one people, and our nation will continue to progress as a united and indivisible country,” Ruto affirmed.
Mudavadi Joins the Fray
The president’s comments come days after Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi took his own swipe at Gachagua. Speaking at a roadside rally in Kakamega County, Mudavadi urged the former deputy president to move on from past grievances and focus on meaningful contributions rather than perpetuating divisive rhetoric.
“If someone was in mourning, the mourning period is over. Kenya must move forward, and we will not be held back by constant complaints,” Mudavadi said.
He further reminded Kenyans of the legal restrictions on impeached officials, noting:
“The law is clear—if you’ve been impeached, you are not eligible for public office, not even as a village elder.”
Ruto’s Vision for Kenya
President Ruto reiterated his administration’s commitment to fostering national unity, combating corruption, and delivering development for all Kenyans. He called on citizens to reject leaders who exploit tribal politics for personal gain, urging them to focus on Kenya Kwanza’s development agenda.
As the 2027 elections approach, Ruto’s pointed remarks signal his determination to maintain a unified front while addressing dissent within the political arena.
