Generous Gesture at Raila Odinga Stadium
Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga demonstrated his unwavering support for Kenyan football by gifting Sh1.1 million to Gor Mahia, Mara Sugar FC, and match officials during a Kenya Premier League (KPL) match on November 30, 2024. The match took place at the Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay County.
Raila, a longtime advocate for sports in Kenya, announced the cash rewards while addressing fans and players. He allocated Sh700,000 to Gor Mahia (fondly known as K’Ogalo), Sh300,000 to Mara Sugar FC, and Sh100,000 to the match officials.
“Referees, I’m giving you Sh100,000. K’Ogalo, the champions who traveled from Nairobi, get Sh700,000. Mara Sugar FC will receive Sh300,000,” Raila said during his speech.
Gor Mahia’s Stellar Performance
The match was pivotal in the FKF Premier League’s 11th week as Gor Mahia sought to build momentum following their recent 2-0 midweek victory over Kakamega Homeboyz. The team continued their winning streak, defeating Mara Sugar FC 2-0.
Austin Odhiambo and Gideon Bender were the heroes of the match, scoring decisive goals in the 87th and 92nd minutes, respectively. This victory propelled K’Ogalo to fifth place in the league standings and marked their second win under interim coach Zedekiah Otieno. Otieno took over following the dismissal of Brazilian coach Leonardo Neiva.
