Renovation works at Gusii Stadium have finally begun as clubs in the Kenya Premier League face crisis over lack of playing facilities.
Currently, Gusii Stadium, Mbaraki Stadium, Moi International Sports Center Kasarani, Kericho Stadium, William Ole Ntimama Stadium in Narok, and Nyayo National Stadium are closed for renovation.
With the FKF Kenya Premier League set to kick off on August 26, most clubs will have to look for alternative home grounds.
Shabana had initially been given permission to host their home grounds in Narok but the facility is currently closed for renovations ahead of Water Companies Sports Organisation (WASCO) games set for August 13-18.
The Stadium will also host the 42nd edition of the Kenya Communications Sports Organisation (KECOSO) Games from August 19-26.
Kisii Governor Simba Arati recently paraded the contractor and asked him to complete the works within two months. Currently, the contractor is doing the drainage works.
Shabana is likely to host their home matches at the newly constructed Homa Bay Stadium.
Shabana secretary general Elizaphan Kerama said: “Our options are open but as of now, Narok is our home ground. Let’s wait and see for now.”
Other clubs which are currently looking for a new home are Bandari after Mbaraki was closed for renovations. KPL Champions Gor Mahia will likely move their home matches to Moi Stadium or Jomo Kenyatta grounds in Kisumu.
The only approved stadiums in Nairobi are Kenya Police Sacco Stadium and Ulinzi Sports Complex in Langata. AFC Leopards and Ulinzi Stars will share Ulinzi Sports Complex.
