Confession and Investigation Unveil Shocking Details

Detectives investigating the brutal murder of University of Nairobi (UoN) student Mercy Kwamboka have confirmed the involvement of two Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldiers in the crime. The soldiers, who were arrested in connection with the 26-year-old’s death, have been placed at the scene of the murder and have confessed to their involvement.
Soldiers Linked to Crime Scene
The soldiers were arrested following the tragic death of Mercy Kwamboka Rufansi, whose body was discovered in Mwiki, Kasarani, on September 28, 2024. Investigators revealed that the suspects had taken law enforcement officers to the scene of the crime, where they confessed to the murder, though they claimed it was accidental.
According to the police, the soldiers’ behavior following Kwamboka’s death raised red flags. Detectives indicated that while the suspects argued the incident was an accident, their actions afterward, including the disposal of the body, suggest otherwise.
A Promising Student’s Life Cut Short
Mercy Kwamboka was a second-year student at the University of Nairobi’s Chiromo Campus, pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. Her family reported that she had been managing epilepsy, but her condition did not interfere with her academic journey.
Kwamboka was reported missing on September 28 after she abruptly left her parents’ home in Pipeline, Embakasi. Tragically, her half-naked body was discovered in a thicket near the Eastern Bypass later that same day. Bruises on her thighs, lower back, and left ankle indicated signs of physical assault.
Beside her body, police found a black blouse, a blanket, and a mobile phone, further cementing the suspects’ connection to the crime. The soldiers were identified as the last individuals to have been in contact with Kwamboka before her death.
Detailed Investigation Leads to Arrest
The arrests came after an intensive manhunt led by detectives from Kasarani Subcounty. Investigators discovered that on the night Kwamboka disappeared, the primary suspect had picked her up and driven her to his home in Komarock. While parked, a confrontation ensued between the suspect and Kwamboka, during which she was assaulted and killed.
The suspect then called for assistance from his accomplice to dispose of the body. Forensic evidence eventually led detectives to the suspects, who were apprehended from their hideouts in Komarock and Tononoka areas of Embakasi.
Confession and Crime Scene Connection
The suspects admitted to being involved in Kwamboka’s death but maintained that it resulted from a fall during their altercation. A blanket used to wrap her body was also linked to the soldiers, further solidifying their involvement in the crime.
A post-mortem revealed that Kwamboka had suffered broken legs, bruises on her gums, and burns on her hands. Witnesses in the area where her body was found reported seeing a car at the scene, which was later traced back to the soldiers.
Legal Proceedings and Family’s Plea for Justice
Police are investigating multiple charges, including murder, rape, kidnap, and robbery, in connection with Kwamboka’s death. The suspects are expected to be arraigned in court, where police will seek more time to hold them as investigations continue.
Kwamboka’s family remains devastated by the loss of their daughter. On the night she went missing, they revealed that she had received a phone call before leaving home abruptly. The family has called for swift justice to be served in the case of their beloved daughter, whose life was cut short under such horrific circumstances.
As the investigation continues, detectives plan to revisit the crime scene and gather more evidence to ensure a thorough prosecution of the suspects involved.
This tragic incident has shocked the nation, raising concerns over violence against women and the urgent need for justice for victims like Mercy Kwamboka.
