Usenge, Onjiko in opening wins as Nyanza ball games kick off at Maranda - Kenyan News

Usenge and Onjiko opened the hunt for the Nyanza region secondary schools boys’ soccer title with hard-fought wins as the Nyanza region games got underway on Saturday at Maranda School in Siaya County.

Usenge edged Matutu PAG 1-0 while Onjiko beat debutants Ndonyo Mixed from Kisii County 1-0.

Captain Brighton Ramolo scored the all-important goal for Usenge, the Siaya county champions. Coach Paul Wambunya said: “My boys took time to settle but once they settled, they scored the lone goal. Our opponents were good and pushed us all the way.”

Onjiko scored through Clifford Barrack.

Onjiko coach Mike Onyango said: “It was a tight encounter that would have gone either way. However, I’m happy we started the competition with a win.” He added: “As I said we have come here to make a statement and we shall do it.”

In girls’ football, former East Africa champions Jera Girls drubbed Nyamira’s Gekomoni 6-1 while defending champions Kobala labored to beat Kisii’s Kerongorori 1-0 in a tough game.

In netball, Oyugi Ogango upset defending champions Kobala 28-20 in the opening game while Kandia beat Ayora from Kisii County 32-0. In boys’ volleyball, favourites Onjiko School started their campaign with a straight-set win over Nyangoma while former champions Raliew beat Chulaimbo 3-1. In the girl’s category, Nyakach Girls beat Aluor 3-1 while Nyakongo saw off Koru Girls by straight sets.
