A tragic case of suspected food poisoning has claimed the life of a 14-year-old boy in Cavari Village, Mavuria Ward, Mbeere South Constituency, Embu County. The boy reportedly consumed leftover food from a public event, which authorities suspect was contaminated.

Incident Unfolds After Community Event

The affected individuals had attended a community function on Saturday, May 13, where some carried leftover food home. The boy and six other family members consumed the food the following day, unaware of its potential contamination.

Henry Nthiga, Chief Officer for Public Health in Embu County, stated that the victims began experiencing severe abdominal pain and diarrhea shortly after eating. Tragically, by the time medical help was sought, the boy’s condition had deteriorated, and he was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

Six Others Hospitalized

The six other individuals who consumed the food remain hospitalized but are reported to be in stable condition. They are expected to be discharged soon.

According to preliminary investigations, the food poisoning likely resulted from improper storage and reheating of the leftovers.

Public Health Officials Urge Caution

Chief Officer Nthiga emphasized the critical importance of food safety, particularly when handling leftovers. “Food must be properly cooked, stored, and reheated to prevent contamination and ensure safety,” he advised.

Nthiga also encouraged residents to engage public health officers when organizing events involving large-scale food preparation and service.

“Our officers are well-trained to inspect and guide food preparation processes for public gatherings to minimize health risks. These measures can prevent avoidable tragedies like this,” he added.

Lessons on Food Safety

This incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of foodborne illnesses and the need for strict adherence to food safety protocols:

  1. Proper Storage: Leftover food should be stored in clean, sealed containers at safe temperatures.
  2. Thorough Reheating: Always reheat leftovers to a safe internal temperature before consuming.
  3. Hygiene Practices: Personal and environmental hygiene is crucial in preventing contamination during food handling and preparation.
