Bishop Edward Mwai of Jesus Winner Ministry in Roysambu, Nairobi, has alleged that individuals he is familiar with organized a group of “thugs” to stage protests at his church on Sunday, March 9, 2025. The demonstration was sparked by public outrage over President William Ruto’s recent pledge of Ksh.20 million to the church, along with an additional Ksh.100 million promised for an upcoming construction fundraiser. Many Kenyans criticized the donation, citing economic hardships and ongoing calls for austerity measures.

The #OccupyJesusWinner Campaign

The protest gained traction on social media under the hashtag #OccupyJesusWinner, with critics accusing the clergyman of accepting substantial donations while the country faces financial strain. Threats to stage a physical demonstration prompted a heavy police presence at the church compound on Sunday to prevent disruptions.

Bishop Mwai Responds to Allegations

While addressing congregants during Sunday’s service, Bishop Mwai refrained from naming the alleged organizers but expressed his belief that the protest was politically motivated.

“People I know very well used them and even sent some here today,” he said. “Someday, they will come to understand the power of God’s presence at this altar. May God forgive those who are manipulating our children in such ways.”

He also claimed that some of the individuals involved in the protest disguised themselves as church members by wearing Jesus Winner badges. However, he urged his followers not to confront them, emphasizing the church’s commitment to peace.

A Message of Forgiveness

Despite the backlash, Bishop Mwai said he had forgiven those who insulted him and criticized the church over the donation.

“I leave it to God. May He forgive those who have wronged us and grant them peace,” he told the congregation.

The incident has reignited debates about the role of religious institutions in political and financial matters, as well as the ethical implications of large donations during economic hardships.
