Meru County officially welcomed Isaac Mutuma M’Ethingia as its new governor during a swearing-in ceremony held on Monday, March 17, 2025, at Mwendantu Grounds. Mutuma, who had been serving as the Deputy Governor since 2022, assumes the mantle of leadership following the impeachment of former Governor Kawira Mwangaza.

Mwangaza’s impeachment, upheld by the Senate in August 2024 and confirmed by a court ruling on March 14, 2025, cited charges of gross misconduct and constitutional violations. The transition marks a pivotal moment for Meru County, as residents and leaders alike look to Mutuma to usher in a new era of unity and progress.
A Call for Unity and Stability
During the swearing-in ceremony, which was attended by prominent leaders from within and beyond Meru County, the pressing need for harmony was a recurring theme. Majority Whip Jim Muchui emphasized the critical task ahead for Governor Mutuma: bridging the longstanding divide between the County Assembly and the Executive.
“For the last two years, Meru has suffered due to leadership instability. We expect the new governor to prioritize uniting the people of Meru and its leadership,” said Muchui.
The Assembly also anticipates swift action on a supplementary budget that had been stalled under the previous administration. Muchui added, “There is an itemized budget we passed, but the former governor refused to implement it. The new leadership must address this immediately.”
A Tumultuous Past and a Promising Future
Former Governor Kawira Mwangaza faced three impeachment motions during her tenure, with the decisive vote in August 2024 seeing 26 senators support her removal. Her turbulent leadership left Meru grappling with political instability and unfulfilled promises.
Now, the spotlight is on Governor Mutuma to chart a new course for the county. Residents are optimistic that his leadership will not only mend divisions but also drive development and restore confidence in county governance.
The journey ahead for Meru County remains challenging, but with a new sheriff in town, there is hope for a brighter, united future.
