In a significant operation, the Kenyan government has rescued 133 children from falling victim to child trafficking. Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua announced the development during a Senate session with the National Cohesion, Equal Opportunity, and Regional Integration Committee, highlighting the government’s commitment to protecting vulnerable children.

Rescue and Support Efforts by the Directorate of Children’s Services
CS Mutua revealed that the children, who were destined for overseas travel without parental or legal guardianship, were intercepted by the Directorate of Children’s Services (DCS). These efforts are part of a broader initiative to counter human trafficking and provide critical support for victims.
“The Directorate of Children’s Services has rescued and assisted 133 victims of trafficking since July 2024,” Mutua stated. He added that during the same period, the ministry approved travel for 2,650 children under proper legal protocols.
The DCS also manages the National Assistance Trust Fund for Victims of Trafficking, which offers necessities, rescue services, and reintegration support to victims. This includes repatriating Kenyans trafficked abroad, with ongoing efforts to bring back citizens trafficked to Myanmar.
Kenya’s Battle Against Human Trafficking
Kenya has been identified as a hotspot for human trafficking in the 2024 Trafficking in Persons Report. The report highlights how traffickers exploit women and children for sex work, often facilitated by family members or online recruitment channels.
The report also notes that foreign nationals are being recruited for sex work in Kenya, exacerbating the issue. Poverty, unemployment, and inadequate legal frameworks continue to fuel this growing crisis.
Worrying Statistics on Violence Against Children
CS Mutua disclosed alarming statistics on violence against children in Kenya, citing the 2019 Violence Against Children (VAC) survey. The survey revealed:
- 45.9% of females and 56.1% of males experienced violence during childhood.
- Physical violence was the most prevalent form, affecting 38.8% of females and 51.9% of males.
- 15.6% of females experienced childhood sexual violence, with most incidents occurring before age 18.
In 2023 alone, 120,909 cases of violence against children were reported and managed by the DCS. Over the past three years, the number of managed cases has risen to 499,298, reflecting the scale of the issue.
Government Initiatives to Combat Child Exploitation
To address these challenges, the government has launched various campaigns, including the “Spot It Stop It” initiative, which raises awareness about the negative impact of childhood violence. Other programs target harmful practices such as:
- Female genital mutilation (FGM)
- Child marriage
- Sexual exploitation, including online abuse
Additionally, the DCS operates 30 statutory children’s institutions, including rescue centers, remand homes, rehabilitation schools, and assessment centers.
A Call to Action
The government’s efforts to combat human trafficking and child exploitation represent a crucial step in safeguarding Kenya’s most vulnerable. However, CS Mutua emphasized the need for inter-agency collaboration and stronger legal frameworks to tackle the root causes of trafficking and violence against children.
