The education sector is mourning the loss of Paul Otula, a former Chief Principal of Maseno School and a celebrated figure in Kenyan education and sports. Otula passed away on Thursday, May 1, 2025, after collapsing at his home in Nairobi, reportedly due to cardiac arrest. His body has been transferred to Lee Funeral Home.

A Legacy of Excellence in Education and Sports

Otula’s illustrious career began in 1998 at Mang’u High School, where he served as a classroom teacher and basketball coach. His dedication and leadership soon earned him the role of Deputy Principal and, eventually, Principal.

In 2001, he assumed the role of Principal at Maseno School, succeeding Walter Okumu Amadi. During his tenure, Maseno excelled in academics and sports, gaining national and international recognition. The school’s rugby team represented Kenya at the Dubai 7s, and its basketball team clinched the Engen Africa Youth Basketball Championships title in South Africa in 2003.

His time at Maseno ended in 2017 following allegations of misconduct, which led to his interdiction.

Transition to Sunshine Secondary and Political Aspirations

In 2018, Otula joined Sunshine Secondary School in Nairobi as Principal, serving until 2021. He later ventured into politics, contesting for the Karachuonyo parliamentary seat in the 2022 General Elections, though he was not successful.

Contributions to Kenyan Basketball

Apart from his contributions to education, Otula was a towering figure in Kenyan basketball. He leveraged his height and passion for the sport to coach and lead. In 2008, he was elected Chairman of the Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF), a position he held for multiple terms. At the time of his passing, Otula was also a member of the executive board of the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK).

Tributes from Former Students and Players

Otula’s impact extended far beyond academics. His former students and players took to social media to express their condolences and gratitude for his mentorship.

“I’m proud to have been coached by you. You pushed us to excel both on and off the court. Your legacy will remain etched in our hearts,” mourned Athman Omar, one of his basketball protégés.

Paul Otula’s contributions to education and sports have left an indelible mark on those he mentored and the institutions he served. His leadership, both in schools and on the basketball court, will be remembered for years to come.
