Security Concerns Following Migori Incident

Speaking during an interview with Citizen TV on May 5, 2025, Senator Nyutu addressed the recent incident in Migori County, where President Ruto was struck by a flying shoe during a rally. The President had been addressing the crowd from his car roof, discussing measures to lower the cost of living.

The Senator highlighted security vulnerabilities associated with such engagements, urging the President to focus more on office-based governance.

“Public appearances from car roofs complicate the work of security personnel, making it difficult to ensure the President’s safety,” Nyutu said. “As the symbol of national unity, any harm to the President would have far-reaching consequences for the country. We pray such incidents never recur.”

Calls for a Shift in Leadership Style

Nyutu also pointed out that frequent informal engagements, including leading public chants such as the viral “Kasongo” song, could diminish the gravitas of the presidential office.

“While public interaction is essential, the President must prioritize policy implementation and development projects to make a tangible impact,” he noted. “When you see the President leading songs like ‘Kasongo,’ it risks eroding the respect and seriousness associated with his office.”

Despite the criticism, President Ruto has embraced the “Kasongo” nickname, stating he harbors no ill feelings toward it.

Arrests and Ongoing Investigations

In the aftermath of the Migori incident, three individuals were arrested. Authorities revealed that preliminary investigations suggest the act may have been politically motivated and premeditated.

A security officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated, “Investigations are ongoing, and additional suspects are being pursued. This is being treated as a significant security matter.”

Conclusion

As the debate around the President’s leadership style continues, many are calling for a balance between public engagement and the strategic execution of policies from the office. With growing security concerns, the need to adapt the approach to governance has become a focal point of national discourse.
