Erastus Edung Ethekon has emerged as the nominee for the coveted position of Chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), a role central to Kenya’s electoral integrity. This high-profile nomination has garnered significant attention, as Edung steps into the spotlight amidst stiff competition from other prominent candidates.

The 48-year-old legal expert now faces parliamentary vetting. If approved, he will shoulder the critical responsibility of overseeing the 2027 General Elections.

A Career Marked by Excellence

Before his nomination, Edung built a reputation as a distinguished legal consultant. He has served as a partner at Northern Consulting Solution and Ethekon & Co. Advocates, contributing over two decades of expertise in legal and strategic advisory roles.

Edung’s career journey began with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), where he worked from 2007 to 2015. During this tenure, he took on various roles, including Program Management Specialist, Programs Advisor, and Chief Technical Advisor in Area-Based Development Programming in Kenya.

In 2018, Edung transitioned to public service as the County Attorney for Turkana County, holding the position for six years. This role solidified his reputation as a skilled legal professional adept at navigating complex governance and policy frameworks.

Academic Brilliance

Edung’s impressive academic background underscores his suitability for the IEBC chairmanship. He earned his Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Nairobi and a Postgraduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law.

Additionally, he has acquired a Postgraduate Certificate in Implementation of International Human Rights Treaties from the University of Nottingham in the UK.

Edung holds three Master’s degrees from prestigious international institutions:

  • Master of Arts (M.A.) in Peace, Conflict & Development Studies – Universidad Jaume I, Spain (2012).
  • Master of Science (MSc.) in Project Management – University of Liverpool, UK (2013).
  • Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Oil, Gas & Energy Law – University of Derby, UK (2016).
