Four individuals sustained severe burns after a chang’aa distillery apparatus exploded in Ngirimori village, Kunyak Ward, Kipkelion West Constituency. The victims, who are now receiving treatment at Kericho County Referral Hospital, were caught in the explosion while warming themselves near the distillation site.


Incident Details
According to local police, the explosion occurred when a group of people gathered near the illicit brewing operation to escape the cold. Victims Mercy Cherono and Irene Oduor recounted how they noticed a blaze from the distillation tank and approached it for warmth before the explosion.
Two of the injured were identified as casual workers at the distillery site. John Kariuki, a relative of one of the victims, expressed concern about the growing prevalence of illicit brewing in the area, which he blamed for escalating addiction and unproductivity among young people.
Community Outcry
Residents of Ngirimori village are calling for swift action to curb the illicit brewing of chang’aa, which they say has been allowed to thrive due to alleged complicity by local officials.
Ruth Wacuka, a local resident, criticized security agencies for failing to act despite repeated reports and complaints. She voiced frustration over the persistent illegal brewing activities that have plagued the community.
Stephen Mburu, another resident, accused local authorities of being compromised, alleging that some officials receive protection fees from the brewers, enabling the illegal operations to continue unabated.
Medical Update
Joel Tanui, Nursing Services Manager at Kericho County Referral Hospital, reported that the victims sustained burns ranging from less than 10% to as much as 32% of their bodies. Fortunately, the patients are in stable condition and receiving proper care.
Government Intervention Needed
The explosion has reignited calls for decisive government intervention to combat the production and sale of illicit brews, which pose a significant danger to public health and safety.
