A 35-year-old man from Merti, Isiolo County, is seeking reconstructive surgery after mutilating his genitals during a drug-induced episode. The shocking incident has raised concerns about the effects of substance abuse and mental health struggles in the region.

Incident Details
The man, whose identity remains confidential, was reportedly under the influence of a dangerous combination of substances, including miraa, cannabis (bhang), Chaves, tobacco, and antipsychotic drugs. According to Collins Shaban, a psychiatrist at a local rehabilitation center, the man’s condition is the second such case the facility has dealt with in a year.
While under the influence, the victim allegedly inserted a metallic object into his genitals, leading to severe infections. In a distressed state, he ultimately resorted to self-mutilation.
Medical Intervention and Recovery Journey
After the incident, the man was rushed to Merti Sub-County Hospital and later referred to Isiolo Referral Hospital and Meru Level Five Hospital. He spent over a month receiving treatment for his physical injuries before being admitted to a rehabilitation center.
Shaban shared that the patient has shown signs of improvement since beginning treatment at the facility. “It’s been less than a month, but he is responding well and slowly regaining self-awareness,” the psychiatrist said.
Despite his mental progress, the man’s physical condition remains critical. Doctors warn that without reconstructive surgery, he risks severe emotional setbacks, including depression, as his mental clarity improves.
Broader Implications
The case highlights the devastating effects of substance abuse and the urgent need for accessible mental health care. It underscores the importance of public education on drug use and early intervention to prevent such extreme outcomes.
The rehabilitation center emphasizes the need for community awareness programs to address addiction, mental health challenges, and their impact on individuals and families.
