In a landmark move, the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) have donated a fully operational military training aircraft to Moi Forces Academy-Lanet. This donation marks a significant milestone as the school pioneers aviation studies, becoming the first National Girls’ School in Kenya to offer Aviation Technology as part of its curriculum.

Empowering Girls Through Aviation
The donation follows the school’s launch of an Aviation Technology program under the theme “Demystifying Aviation.” The initiative seeks to provide over 50 enrolled students with practical exposure to aviation operations. Unlike past contributions, which typically involved decommissioned planes, this fully functional aircraft sets a precedent for hands-on learning.
“This initiative empowers young women to explore aviation technology, preparing them for a bright future in the industry,” remarked Major General Fatuma Gaiti Ahmed, Kenya Air Force Commander, during the handover ceremony on May 11, 2025.
Breaking Barriers in Education
Moi Forces Academy-Lanet’s introduction of Aviation Technology builds on a foundation laid by schools such as Mang’u High School, which was the first to offer the subject in Kenya. Technical areas of study in aviation include propulsion systems, thermodynamics, and meteorology.

While Mang’u students conduct practical sessions at Wilson Airport and Moi Air Force Base in Embakasi, Moi Forces Academy-Lanet’s functional aircraft ensures that students gain immersive, hands-on experience directly on campus.
This move is expected to inspire other girls’ schools to follow suit, breaking gender stereotypes in technical education and paving the way for equal opportunities in aviation and related fields.
A Broader Impact
The donation is part of a broader push by educational institutions to integrate aviation into their curricula. Other notable schools offering aviation programs include Moi Forces Academy in Nairobi and Maseno School in Kisumu. These initiatives align with Kenya’s ambition to nurture homegrown talent for its growing aviation industry.
