The Kenya Prisons Service (KPS) has launched a nationwide recruitment drive for 2025, seeking qualified candidates to fill various positions, including prison constables, professional cadet officers, technicians, and artisans. The recruitment exercise for constables is set for Wednesday, April 30, 2025, and applications for cadet officers, technicians, and artisans are to be submitted online.

Who Can Apply? Eligibility and Qualifications

The recruitment aims to provide opportunities for Kenyan citizens who meet specific qualifications based on the role applied for. Below are the key eligibility requirements for each category:

  1. Constables (Male & Female):
    • Must be a Kenyan citizen with a valid National ID.
    • Aged between 18 and 28 years.
    • Minimum KCSE grade: D+ (plus).
    • Height requirement:
      • Men: At least 5 feet 4 inches.
      • Women: At least 5 feet 2 inches (and must not be pregnant at the time of recruitment).
    • Must be physically and mentally fit with clear vision and hearing.
    • Should carry the following on recruitment day:
      • Original National ID and Birth Certificate.
      • KRA PIN certificate.
      • Academic certificates and testimonials.
  2. Professional Cadet Officers:
    • A relevant undergraduate degree from a recognized institution.
    • Examples of positions available include medical officers, psychiatrists, pharmacists, and civil engineers.
  3. Technicians:
    • A certificate or diploma in a relevant technical field.
    • Registration with relevant professional bodies where applicable.
    • Positions include animal health officers, horticultural officers, and others.
  4. Artisans:
    • Minimum KCSE grade: D+ (plus).
    • A Government Trade Test Grade I/II certificate or equivalent qualification in a craft from a recognized institution.
    • Positions available include carpenters, plumbers, interior designers, and hairdressers.

Application Process

For cadet officers, technicians, and artisans, applicants must:

  • Complete the PSC.2 form (available on the Public Service Commission website).
  • Attach photocopies of academic and professional certificates, and a copy of their National ID.
  • Submit the application to the Commissioner General of Prisons by April 30, 2025.

For constables, the recruitment will be conducted in person at designated venues in all 47 counties. In Nairobi, venues include Nyayo Stadium, Ndurarua Stadium, Jacaranda Grounds, and Moi Sports Centre Kasarani, among others.

Important Guidelines

  • No fees required: The recruitment process is free of charge.
  • Applicants are warned against bribery or presenting fake documents, as this will result in disqualification and possible prosecution.

Training and Deployment

Successful candidates will undergo rigorous training:

  • Constables, technicians, and artisans: 9 months of training.
  • Cadets: 13 months of training.

The selected candidates will join a prestigious service dedicated to ensuring the safety, security, and rehabilitation of inmates across Kenya.
