A series of devastating night fires wreaked havoc in Kericho County’s Ainamoi Constituency on Saturday night, destroying property worth an unverified amount at Brooke and Kapsoit trading centers. At Brooke trading center, several semi-permanent rental structures near the local Catholic church were completely razed by the inferno. Witnesses report that the fire began in one of the houses and quickly spread to neighboring structures, leaving nothing but ashes in its wake.

Second Fire Strikes Kapsoit Trading Center
Shortly after the Brooke incident, another fire erupted at Kapsoit trading center, a few kilometers away, consuming business premises near the Sky Lounge. Residents were alarmed by thick smoke billowing from one of the buildings and quickly gathered to attempt extinguishing the flames. However, strong winds and the intensity of the fire thwarted their efforts.
Challenges in Fighting the Fires
The response to the fires was met with significant challenges. At Brooke, the fire brigade arrived at the scene but faced backlash from angry residents when it was discovered their fire engine lacked water.
Tensions escalated, leading to the firefighters being pelted with stones and chased away. One firefighter reportedly sustained injuries during the commotion. The team was forced to refill their water supply from a nearby stream before returning to the scene.
Eventually, the fire brigade from James Finlays Tea Company stepped in and managed to extinguish the fires at both Brooke and Kapsoit trading centers, preventing further destruction.
Cause of Fires Remains Unknown
Residents and authorities have not yet established the causes of the fires at either location. Investigations are ongoing to determine what sparked the twin infernos that left many counting losses.
A Plea for Improved Fire Response Systems
The incidents highlight the pressing need for improved fire response systems in Kericho County. Residents have called for better-equipped firefighting units and faster response times to mitigate future disasters.
